The average woman spends about 17 minutes simply deciding what to wear in the morning. It may not sound like much, but 17 minutes is a huge obstacle when you’re trying to make it to work or school drop-off on time. If you’re someone who loves solving a problem (like me!), then you’re already dreaming of ways to simplify the task of getting dressed, but it’s easy to fall into the trap of dressing down in order to dress quickly. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if everything in your closet just worked? No more looking at a full closet and feeling like you have nothing to wear, and no more skipping beautiful pieces because you aren’t sure how to style them. If you could wear everything in your closet with almost everything else, you could unlock endless outfit possibilities without compromising your style!
This dream is absolutely a reality. In the style world, we call it a capsule wardrobe. Capsules are a wonderful way to save time and reduce overbuying while effortlessly elevating your personal style. Your perfect capsule should be just as unique as you are, but it can be challenging to build a collection of clothes that shows off your personality and still feels cohesive as a whole. A successful capsule wardrobe happens when your outfits feel true to you, and there’s no better foundation than your personal color palette for easy mixing and matching.
Start with Your Color Palette
Most capsule wardrobe samples you might find on Pinterest are pretty uniform in terms of color. You’ll see a lot of the ‘French Girl’ aesthetic, which rarely ventures from black, white, and gray, since basic shades are easiest to mix and match. While this look can be incredibly chic on some women, it simply doesn’t work for everyone. It’s important to reference your personal color palette to build a wardrobe that feels right for you.
In case you’re just tuning in to this month’s blog series, we’ve been diving into the secrets of color analysis as the key to boosting your personal style. By working with a certified color analyst to determine your best colors, you can harmonize your clothing with your skin tone, eyes, and hair to create a fully cohesive look. If you love hearing, “Wow! That dress really brings out your eyes!” then color analysis is a must for you!
Color analysis is your best friend when it comes to creating a capsule wardrobe that reflects your style and personality. Once you’ve nailed down your seasonal color palette, identify the colors that especially speak to you to jumpstart your capsule’s base palette. You should first choose 2-3 core neutrals such as navy, charcoal, ivory, camel, or another basic color that provides a balanced background for almost anything. Next, you’ll want to find 2-3 accent colors: brighter (or more saturated) seasonal shades from your palette like pink, blue, or red that you can use to add vibrance and visual interest to your neutral base. For an added style boost, choose a signature hero color: one featured accent shade that particularly stands out to you and can be worn year-round. It’s likely that your favorite color is already in your seasonal color palette, as we naturally feel drawn to the colors that harmonize with our features. (My hero color is hot pink!)

Anchor Pieces in Neutrals
Neutrals should be the foundation of your capsule wardrobe. They’re the easiest and often most elegant shades to style, making for infinite versatility and timelessness when building your looks. When you’re looking for wardrobe staples - ‘core’ pieces that you expect to wear often and in many different ways, like jackets, pants, bags, and shoes - it’s generally a good rule to purchase these pieces in neutrals. This will give the appearance that you intentionally match your purse to every outfit, even if you only own one or two bags! It's a foolproof method for always looking put-together.
As a pro styling tip, it’s always best to invest in high-quality staples and have them tailored to fit you perfectly if possible. As women, we often overlook tailoring, but it’s just as important for our style as it is for men. Because your neutral basics will anchor your wardrobe on a daily basis, it’s important that they are impeccably crafted and can withstand regular wear without needing to be repurchased annually.
Layer in Accent Colors
Once you’ve aced your neutrals, it’s time to add some exciting accent colors! It’s important not to skip this step, as accent colors create visual interest, and without them, your wardrobe will feel monotone and bland. Accents are a great avenue for showing off your unique personality, and the right colors will send your energy and mood soaring. Layer your accent colors onto a neutral foundation through ‘smaller’ pieces like tops and accessories that can be swapped out seasonally. This is a great way to experiment with color, as a scarf or a pair of shoes is less of an investment than something like a coat, giving you the freedom to play with your palette and find what you like.
A great tip for pairing colors in an outfit is to stick to one neutral and one accent shade. This ensures that the outfit is cohesive without becoming busy or overwhelming. If you want to add some texture, choose a top or an accessory with a print that incorporates both the neutral and accent that you’ve chosen for your outfit. This can pull your whole look together and make you look perfectly styled without throwing off the balance!
Use Color Bridges
Since the goal of a capsule wardrobe is to streamline your wardrobe, it doesn’t make sense to stuff your closet full of clothes for the sake of covering all the bases in your color palette. To solve this problem, I recommend finding things that can serve as a color bridge to tie interesting outfits together. A well-designed pattern can “bridge” items in your closet that might not otherwise make sense. We’ve talked about wearing prints that incorporate the neutrals and accent colors from other components of your outfit, but it helps to have pieces with multiple colors from your palette that can fit more than one color combination. For example, a floral blouse containing a neutral, accent, and hero color could be styled beautifully in a myriad of ways: you might choose to change out your pants for a skirt, or accessorize with the green of the foliage in the pattern rather than the purple of the petals. With a color bridge, you can maximize your outfit and color variations without getting bored of wearing the same piece the same way over and over again.

Build Capsules by Season or Lifestyle
It would be limiting to strive for a single capsule wardrobe that covers every season and occasion. Our lives are complex, and so are our wardrobes. Even in simplifying, we have to make room for the nuances of real life. When I’m assembling a capsule wardrobe, I like to create mini capsules for different needs. You wouldn’t want to wear your business professional clothing to a Fourth of July barbecue, nor would it make sense to wear your breezy beach dress to the office. There’s a way to identify and maintain your personal style across all occasions by putting together mini-capsules for work, casual, travel, and whatever else your schedule entails on a regular basis.
Your mini capsules may even have some crossover. For example, the blouse you wear under a blazer at work might look really cute with jeans for a day out with your girlfriends! The thing that should unify your mini capsules as one large capsule wardrobe is, of course, your color palette, but each mini capsule will feature different focus pieces that set the right tone for your circumstances.
It’s helpful to create a different set of mini capsules to suit the changing seasons, as well. While your occasion-based mini capsules will highlight different styles of clothing, your seasonal capsules will be guided by your color palette. Your spring and summer capsule is a great time to bring out light neutrals and brighter accent colors in styles that are comfortable in the warmer weather. In your fall and winter capsule, you can work in the rich neutrals and deeper accents in your palette. We’ve come to associate these color schemes with their corresponding seasons already, but there’s science behind why we wear these colors seasonally. Light colors deflect heat, keeping your body cool during intensely bright and hot months. Darker colors, on the other hand, attract and absorb heat to insulate you from chilly weather. (Think about the difference in temperature between dark asphalt and light concrete sidewalks on a hot summer day!) Shifting your color choices seasonally can help you stay both stylish and comfortable year-round.

Keep a Mix-and-Match Mindset When Shopping
You don’t have to plan your whole capsule wardrobe out on paper or start your closet from scratch to be successful. No matter where you are on your style journey, chances are that you already own plenty of great pieces to use as a baseline when curating your capsule. Here are a few helpful questions to ask yourself when you’re shopping that may help you decide whether or not a piece you like will be a stylish addition to your wardrobe:
Does it go with at least 3 things I already own?
We all have things in our closet that we simply love to wear. Just because you’re streamlining your wardrobe, you don’t have to get rid of the items that bring you joy. Instead, ask yourself what thoughtful additions you can make to your wardrobe to create cohesion overall. Avoid buying things that don’t feel like they go with what you already own.
Is it in my palette?
Familiarizing yourself with your seasonal color palette is a great way to ensure you’re buying pieces that will elevate your wardrobe rather than simply expand it. When you book a color analysis with me, you’ll get a complimentary pocket-sized color fan with swatches of every color in your palette, perfect for taking on your shopping trips to be sure you’re picking out colors that will make you shine!
Does it fill a wardrobe gap or duplicate something?
It might be a good idea to have a couple of pairs of jeans for the sake of practicality, but you don’t need multiple flowy white blouses or leather jackets in your wardrobe. When you see something you like, take a mental inventory of the pieces you already own and ask yourself if you already have something in your closet that can serve the same purpose. If you do, maybe it’s time to try styling it in a new way so that it feels fresh again!
In a capsule wardrobe, there shouldn’t be any ‘orphans,’ or stand-alone pieces that clash with the rest of your closet. Truthfully, even if you love that ‘orphan’ piece, if it doesn’t go with anything else you own, you’ll be forced to choose between looking disheveled or never wearing that piece at all. Instead, strive to either find a way to tie it into your other outfits or bite the bullet and donate it to someone who would love to wear it!
Outfit-Combining Shortcuts
Once you’ve curated your wardrobe, it’s time to put the pieces together. I have a few shortcuts to creating outfits that make styling your capsule wardrobe foolproof and fabulous! Once again, color is the name of the game when it comes to personal style. I’ve mentioned the strategy of pairing a neutral with an accent color in your outfits, but if you want to get more specific, choose your outfits according to the Color Ratio Rule: 60% neutral, 30% accent, and 10% pop color. Your pop color could be an exciting red shoe, some playful lemon-yellow earrings, or even a funky, colorful frame for your eyeglasses! This is a great way to play your style personality and create a high-fashion feel.
A stylish outfit doesn’t always have to be multicolored, either. When you picture Queen Elizabeth II or Audrey Hepburn, for example, their signature looks were simple, monochromatic ensembles in colors that drew attention to their beautiful natural features. Aside from being the quickest way to signal luxury and elegance, monochromatic outfits slim and elongate your figure, and can be surprisingly easy to style. Monochrome doesn’t always mean a single shade, either; an outfit composed of different variations of the same color (with the same undertone) can be just as sophisticated.
